Hilltop Estate
This new residence in Sonoma, located on a sloping, heavily wooded 19-acre site with views of San Pablo Bay and the San Francisco skyline, includes a single level three-bedroom home with a swimming pool, separate three-car garage with exercise room, and an independent guest house. All three buildings were sited to maximize views and create year-round usable exterior space. To achieve the single-level home design the owners desired, we created a raised auto court with parking provided below the main story and in a separate barn building. Inside the auto court, the front entrance is through a two-story glass vestibule, bringing guests into the main level. The 360-degree views from the house are maximized by expansive, pocketed sliding doors. The house’s three volumes organize entertaining and dining, a master bedroom suite, guest bedrooms, and work areas into separate wings allowing management of heating and cooling. The main living areas utilize expansive glass openings and single pitch roofs with generous overhangs, providing ample sun protection throughout the year. Secondary circulation spaces connect the main volumes with lower flat roofs promoting a varying sense of scale and importance moving throughout the house. Cedar siding, steel windows, seamed metal roofing, and native stone walls are materials selected to anchor the house to its natural environment.
