Healdsburg Compound
Located in the Dry Creek area of Healdsburg, this 10-acre, valley view property is the family compound for two physicians. This site provided the unusual opportunity to include two houses on one parcel, as primary residences: one for the owners and one for their three children and future families. In addition to the two houses, multiple outdoor living areas and two additional buildings create a unified compound.
The couple's initial vision for the property was rooted in traditional farmhouse design, with such distinguishing elements as wrap-around porches and level gardens. The sloping site, however, required a non-traditional approach that considered grade as well as sun and wind patterns. Moreover, each building needed to orient towards prominent views and yet provide adequate separation and privacy for family members and guests.
Considering both client needs and site challenges, we arrived at a design solution that employed simplified, linear forms and a single-pitch roof. The design's clean geometry maximized opportunities to fill rooms with natural light, capture views, and open to the natural environment.
