Small Firms, Great Projects 2020
CahillStudio is pleased to be featured in AIA San Francisco's Small Firms, Great Projects publication. The 2020 issue reflects the diversity, depth, and excellence of some of the Bay Area's top design thinking.
Hilltop Estate is our featured project, which emphasizes a seamless connection to the outdoors in each of its three buildings. The compound sits atop a steep 17-acre site in the Sonoma hills with panoramic views over San Pablo Bay to the San Francisco skyline and Sonoma Valley. The feel was to be rural contemporary. Our design strategy employed simplified forms influenced by regional farmhouse vernacular to express clean geometry. Materiality was informed by the landscape using a palette of natural materials, including large expanses of glass, rectilinear stone veneer, horizontal cedar siding, and concrete. Working closely with Roche and Roche Landscape Architecture, we maximized limited level ground to step the residence, car barn, auto court, guesthouse, terraces, and patios into the rugged slope while preserving native woodlands.
